The word Tuckahoe is Native American for Welcome.

The mansion it built on top of a large mound or “midden”, which was created about 4000 years ago by Native Americans piling their refuse consisting of animals bones, shells, and other materials. The Ais Indians occupied the site some 4000 years ago and the site is now designated a National Historic Site.
